Air conditioning service: recharge is not always the fix

Air conditioning service: recharge is not always the fix

When cabin air stops getting cold, many drivers ask only for a refrigerant recharge. That request is incomplete. Refrigerant does not “wear out” under normal conditions. If the level is low, the system has usually leaked or was never filled correctly after earlier work.

A professional A/C appointment should cover

  • Performance test with temperature readings at the vents
  • Leak detection before or after recovery of remaining gas
  • Cabin filter condition and blower performance
  • Compressor clutch and pressure switch behaviour where accessible

When a recharge is appropriate

A recharge makes sense after a confirmed repair, or when a measured deficit is small and no active leak is found. Blindly adding gas to a leaking circuit is temporary and can harm the compressor if oil leaves the system with the refrigerant.

Book an A/C service with a note about weak cooling, unusual smells, or intermittent cold air. Clear symptoms help the technician choose dye tests, electronic sniffers, or filter replacement before any refill.

FAQ

Does AC gas just run out?

Not in a sealed system. Low level usually means a leak that should be found first.

Will a cabin filter fix mouldy smell?

Often for the first minutes of airflow. Persistent odour may need evaporator cleaning.
