Seasonal tire changeovers: timing, pressure, and storage

Seasonal tire swaps are routine in colder regions, yet many appointments still arrive late in the first frost week. Workshops fill quickly. Drivers who book before temperatures settle get better slot choice and calmer mornings.

When to switch

A practical rule is to fit winter tires when overnight temperatures regularly fall near the point where summer rubber hardens. Do not wait for the first ice on the road. Summer tires lose grip long before snow is visible.

Pressure and balance

After every changeover, set pressure to the vehicle placard values, not the number moulded on the tire sidewall. Ask for a balance check if you feel vibration after the swap. Uneven wear from last season often shows up only after the car returns to the road.

Storage of the unused set

  • Clean off brake dust and road film before storage
  • Keep tires cool, dry, and away from direct sun and oil vapours
  • If stacked, avoid crushing sidewalls under heavy weight
  • Mark the wheel position (front left, rear right) so rotation history is clear
