Maintenance
Cold mornings expose weak batteries first
Batteries fail more often in cold weather because chemical activity slows and starter demand rises. Many units that “seemed fine” in summer cannot deliver full cranking amps after an overnight frost.
Symptoms worth booking for
- Slow or laboured engine crank
- Clicking from the starter with no start
- Interior lights dimming when you turn the key or press start
- Need for frequent jump starts
- Clock, radio, or driver settings resetting
What a proper check includes
A workshop should test the battery under load, check charging voltage from the alternator, and inspect terminals for corrosion. Replacing the battery without confirming the charging system can leave you stranded again within weeks.
Book a battery check before winter if the unit is older than four to five years, or sooner if short urban trips dominate your driving. Modern cars with start-stop systems often need the correct AGM or EFB specification, not a generic replacement.
FAQ
Battery light on while driving — battery or alternator?
Often charging (alternator/belt). Test voltage before replacing only the battery.
Overheating only in traffic?
Classic electric fan / relay issue when there is no ram air.
