Warped brake discs: vibration when braking and when to replace

Drivers searching “vibration when braking” or “warped brake discs” usually feel a pulse in the pedal or steering at speed. Ignoring it wears pads unevenly and lengthens stopping distance.

Typical causes

  • Heat spots from hard stops with a cold disc
  • Corrosion ridges after the car sat unused
  • Wheel bolts tightened unevenly after a tire change
  • Worn pads that leave the disc face uneven

Repair vs replace

Some discs can be skimmed if thickness remains above the minimum stamped on the hat. Thin, cracked, or deeply scored discs must be replaced in axle pairs with matching pads.

Book a brake service on CarFix, note the speed where vibration starts, and ask for measured disc thickness before approving parts.

FAQ

Is brake squeal always urgent?

Often wear indicators. Grinding metal-on-metal needs a bay soon to save the discs.

Should pads and discs be replaced together?

If discs are below minimum thickness or heavily scored, replace as an axle set with new pads.
